Security State Bank, Littlefield, Texas has
been a part of the growth of Littlefield since October 4, 1947, when it
celebrated its opening. At that time, the bank was housed in temporary quarters
in the Yellowhouse building located at 401 Phelps Avenue.
The original slate of officers included: Art
Cheshier, President; L. C. Hewitt, Vice President; and Paul Hyatt, Cashier.
Directors included: Art Cheshier, L. C. Hewitt, A. P. Duggan, Jr., E. J. Foust
and Paul Hyatt.
In 1948, the bank moved into a building located
at 513 Phelps Avenue. In the same year, J. C. Hilbun obtained controlling
interest of the bank, becoming its president. Ten years later, in 1958, E. J.
Wicker purchased Mr. Hilbun's interest in the bank and became president. In
August of 1965, the existing facility was built at 501 Phelps Avenue.
In 1977, Wicker sold controlling interest of
the bank to State Bancshares, Inc., with Kenneth Burgess becoming president
until May of 1981, when Deryl Bennett became president.
In 1983, the bank renovated and remodeled with
the building doubling in size. An off- site drive-in window was also built
across the street.
In early 1984, Security State Bank was merged
with Independent Bancshares, Inc. of Abilene, Texas, a larger holding company
with more member banks.
In August 1988, George Richardson was elected
by the board of directors to serve as president and in September 1989, John
Holton of Wellington, Texas, obtained controlling interest of the bank from
Independent Bancshares, Inc., and once again Security State Bank was locally
owned.
